Hey, Beachtown! Can you tell us a little about what you do and how you came to be where you are today?
We’re three best friends who started making bedroom pop at the end of 2019 after meeting by chance at a Rex Orange County concert in London. We started Beachtown in November after we encountered copyright problems with our older project name (it was a pretty sad situation as we lost our old songs but now we look back and think of it as a good thing).
Going straight to it, how does your debut EP Homesick speak to where you’re at as a band right now, and how is it a reflection of this new musical chapter?
We’d say that we’re in a good spot, and that Homesick is a reflection of us easing into our own sound. We’re still experimenting and trying to incorporate sounds and ideas from other genres that we enjoy, such as rock and R&B.
What would you say was the biggest difference in the creative process of Homesick, compared to your previous music?
Well thanks to Ondrej and Rupert, our producers, we were able to record it in a studio with awesome equipment, gear and of course both their experience and skills, which really helped us improve the songs and project as a whole, compared to our previous music which was mostly produced and recorded at home.
What has been the most surprising thing for you about your career or the music industry as a whole so far?
When we first set out to create music, it was only really for fun, but as we progressed we noticed there were quite a lot of people actually streaming and enjoying our music. I guess the moment we realised we might actually be able to do music as a career was the most surprising and exciting thing.
What would you say are your greatest strengths as artists?
Our greatest strength is probably that we don’t stick to one specific genre, we like to blend broad genres such as indie and rock with our own experimental sound. As well as this we’re quite self-sufficient when it comes to organisation and A&R.
How would you describe your music to someone who may have not heard it before?
Lo-fi indie rock with an experimental twist.
Do you have any upcoming shows and is there a particular city, festival or venue you dream of performing in and why?
We are looking to play some shows next year and our dream festival to play at would either be Lollapalooza or Primavera Sound.
If you were to choose one person to collaborate with, who would it be and why?
We are super into the new Dijon album, which was co-produced by Mk.gee, who we’ve always been a huge fan of. We love the quality of his production and the insane sounds he’s able to achieve, so we’d have to say Mk.gee.
Do you have a guilty music and/or entertainment pleasure?
Definitely Hyperpop. We don’t want to like it but sometimes it’s just so catchy. The song ‘burbank house’ by tsubi club and Brakence’s album ‘punk2’ are up there for us.
Do you have any tips for young performers starting out in the field?
Make music that you enjoy, not necessarily what’s popular or what someone tells you is good to make.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Don’t force things, let them happen naturally for you.
What’s the ultimate goal for Beachtown?
To tour the world and to hopefully inspire people!
To finish off with what do you hope your fans/listeners take away with them when they listen to your debut EP?
Homesick is the first of many projects for us, it’s sort of an introduction to beachtown. We hope our listeners take away excitement and anticipation for our future releases, as well as something personal to them.
