11 Songs From 2021 – Week 42

Reading Time: 6 Minutes

Number 11 – Pa Mis Muchachas by Christina Aguilera, Becky G, Nicki Nicole and Nathy Peluso

The combination of Latin and Urban rhythms give this song a perfect balance, I can see this song being played in clubs at Halloween, Christmas and also featuring in Telenovelas.

In a matter of days it has been viewed over 5 million times and will grow even more in the coming weeks. The song is entrancing and makes you embrace your wild side in every way, the video also brings you back to a time almost forgotten, perhaps the 30s with the styling, hair and old home cinema.

Number 10 – Somebody by Keshi

Would I want to be locked in this mansion on Hallows Eve, if I got to listen to this talent yes even if it was a little spooky. In relation to Halloween lovers go check out new song Halloween IV:Innards by Ashnikko and Black Crow by Kingdom which is beyond breathtaking but do so after giving “Somebody a watch and listen” and let me know what you think in the comments below.

Describing “Somebody” is difficult but one would say it’s a song that’s airy and that makes it so much easier to focus on the lyrics and jam along with the American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Houston. The more I listen to the song the more I’m getting hooked, so a little warning the same may happen to you.

Number 9 – Soaked by LÉON

This song I could imagine playing on the radio driving down the road in Santa Monica in the 80s, a time that felt like yesterday. Thank you for bringing back an alternative version of the past LÉON that seems like it’s lost and out of sight.

This song is so empowering it’s great to listen to if you’re having writer’s block and unable to note down your thoughts. Being featured on the likes of Vogue, Glamour, In-Style and The FADER, we know that this is just the start of the young soul’s journey.

Number 8 – Up All Night by The Ramona Flowers & Nile Rodgers

If I have Insomnia then we can perhaps blame it on this electrifying beat by Bristol based quartet The Ramona Flowers made up of Steve, Sam and Dave. The collaboration with artist Nile Rodgers adds to the indie vibes of the song.

You can connect with the band on the following social platforms, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Featured on Earmilk, Vents Magazine and now Origins Of CJM, go show the band some love.

Number 7 – Tie a Cherry by CL

CL is a top female performer In Asia period,, one may not know what all the words mean, but there’s no doubt that the rapper CL deserves a place on the A List for her new song “Tie a Cherry”.

Please take a listen to her new song and go back and take a look at week 3 where CL was number 3 with the song “Lover Like Me”, which really is an amazing tune. The style of CL in this video is crazy and that’s why she is highly respected in the fashion industry and has been the muse for Moschino and Alexander Wang among others.

Number 6 – Halfway by Mimi Webb

Amelia Webb better known as Mimi Webb is a British singer-songwriter who gets her inspiration from old time classic jazz and pop singers such as Louis Armstrong, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole as well as more modern performers such as Adele and Sam Smith. Mimi started her introduction into music at 13 and got signed at the age of 18 which led to great success with singles “Before I Go” and “Good Without”.

Her latest song Halfway is part of her debut EP Seven Shades of Heartbreak and the EP is gaining popularity by the likes of Dork among others. It may be hard to get hold of tickets unless you know the venue manager like I do. If you are interested, reach out to me and I’ll try my best to outsource a seat, alternatively become an intern backstage at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London on 28th February 2022.

Number 5 – ADCT by Morgan

Unfortunately I can’t find the original to compare to which I know fans were a big fan of, that said I really do like this version of Morgan’s song ADCT and so do publications such as New Wave Magazine, Mixtape Madness and GRMDaily.

Morgan’s song certainly is favoured to make it into these publications, they don’t just write about anybody, trust me I know from experience when I was a music publicist. Going back to the soul/R&B song just give it a listen, I promise it will not disappoint.

Number 4 – Looks Like Me by Dean Lewis

Dean Lewis, is an Australian singer-songwriter that has given us hits such as “Waves” and “Be Alright” which became certified platform within 4 weeks of it’s release.

The lyrics behind the song are based on true emotions experienced by Dean and you can feel that in his voice, like many of his other songs. Looks Like me is pure, catchy and simply fantastic.

Number 3 – Start Walking by Tove Styrke

Tove Stryke is a Swedish singer and songwriter who first gained popularity at the age of 17 when she finished third in Swedish Idol 2009. Her single “Say My Name” was included in Rolling Stone’s 100 best songs of the decade.

Her new song ‘’Start Walking’’ sees us transported back to the 70’s when times were groovy and summer camps did not end with blood and splatter. The aesthetic visuals are phenomenal and makes us want to be involved with Tove on stage.

Number 2 – Searching by KAWALA

I only needed to hear the song for 5 seconds to know I needed it in my top 11, the voices of this band are very distinctive and rather soothing too, it’s no surprise that the visuals of the new song ‘Searching’ is set at the beach as the song is tranquil and peaceful, something we need on these darker winter days.

You can thank the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club and Half Moon Run for inspiring this Indie Folk act that originally consisted of Jim and Dan before Ben (drums), Reeve (bass) and Dan Lee (electric guitar) joined. For those that want to know the boys better you can check out there ‘Paradise Heights” episodes over on youtube here.

Number 1 – Rock With You by SEVENTEEN

It wouldn’t be a top 11 if I didn’t place a k pop song or two into the selection pool. This week we were given a band with 13 members, yes 13 which is a record for me however the band is divided into 3 sub units each with a different area of specialization: ‘Hip-Hop Unit’, ‘Vocal Unit’, and ‘Performance Unit’. With so many members they write their own lyrics and choreograph their own dance moves making them a self producing idol group.

With three studio albums and 10 EPs since the band’s debut in 2015, they certainly have kept themselves busy. Besides being nominees of the Billboard Music Awards, the boys have also  received a commendation from the Prime Minister of South Korea for their contribution to the development of South Korea’s contemporary pop culture and arts in the year 2020 which I must say is rather remarkable. We should all take a page out of the boys book and contribute more to building a future for the next generation.
